Pre Rup, Angkor’s Mountain Temple – A Travel Guide

The Pre Rup Temple  is one of the most popular temples within Angkor Archaeological Park. According to historians, Pre Rup means “turn over the body,” so it’s believed that funeral rituals were conducted here in the past.

It was constructed in the mid 10th century during the rule of King Rajendravarman II and dedicated to the god “Shiva,” the destroyer.

There are five towering temples at the summit of Pre Rup, each one around 10 stories high. It takes some leg power to reach the peak, but once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the landscape. .

While touring the temples you will find many Buddhist shrines like these since many of the temples are still actively used as places of worship.

According to my tuk tuk driver during peak season many tourists flock to this temple for sunrise or sunset viewing. I traveled to Siem Reap in September which was still within the rainy season so the skies were often overcast.

Cambodia weather is wet and rainy from June to October  and dry from November to May. Definitely, an ideal time to travel is during the dry season. Although, the downside to that is it may be more crowded at the temples and hotel and B&B rates may be higher.

Still, Siem Reap, is way affordable for any traveler compared to other Southeast Asia destinations like Singapore or Hong Kong.

These smaller temples are believed to have been used for worship of minor deities. 

A visit to Pre rup Temple reveals the mysticism and religiosity of the ancient Angkor civilization. Just like other awe-inspiring temples in the vicinity, it will open you up to a new world and teach you to be more appreciative of your own.
